Birkesø, together with the other three lakes, Tofte Sø, Lillesø and Møllesø, has always been part of the landscape in the original high bog. The lakes are probably formed by the fact that calcareous water from the underground has prevented the moss from overgrowing them and thereby keeping them open. Birksø was then a 4 meter deep lake with an area of 130 ha.
