Varde Å, which is formed at the confluence of Grindsted Å and Ansager Å, is Denmark's 4th largest river system. It drains 1100 km². At the end of the river in Ho Bay, between 7,500 to 50,000 liters of water per second.

In the river system - as the only place in the world - the special trio: the salmon, the snail and the pearl mussel lives.

The large river system has, even according to Danish conditions, been particularly tortured by aquaculture, pollutants, regulations and barriers. But in 2010, the large snail project opened a large part of the river and by 2022 Holme Å is expected to be traced back to his previous course. The barriers are soon gone, so the future of the river system seems promising.

The biggest tributaries are Alslev Å, Linding Å, Grindsted Å, Ansager Å, Kybæk, Skonager Lilleå, Kærbæk and Holme Å.

Over long stretches, today, intensive salmon fishing and place names such as Hodde, Nørholm, Vesterbæk, Guardborg, Kongens Kær, the airfield and the Alslev swings are associated with great experiences.

Varde Å runs out into the Wadden Sea at the bottom of Ho Bay - without being regulated by locks. Therefore, the meadows are affected along the lower part of the river of the tide. The forces of nature have free play and the water has for millennia flooded the river valley from time to time.

The two major associations are Varde and Grindsted Sports Fishing Associations, both of which carry out water and fish care and collaborate with other associations in the Varde Å Association.
